I'm walking to end violence against women and children.

In September this year, my little boy and I will once again pull on our trainers and do a couple of laps around Centennial Park to raise money for the incredible Women's & Girls' Emergency Centre (WAGEC)’, which supports women and children experiencing domestic violence, homelessness and trauma.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, family and domestic violence-related offences rose by 8% (+7,103 offenders) in FY24–25, the highest annual increase recorded since national FDV data was first published in 2019.*

And 78% of FDV offenders were male.*

These numbers are devastatingly hard to read. They are not acceptable and something needs to change.

As a mum to a three-year-old boy and future feminist, I want him to be part of that change. I want him to grow up understanding that looking out for others, standing up for what’s right and helping people who are in need is essential to being a bl**dy good human.

That’s why we’re doing this again.

While he doesn’t fully grasp why some people need this kind of support, he does understand that by walking, “we are helping other Mummas and babies who may not have the things we do, like toys.”

The fact that he remembers that from last year and wants to help makes me so incredibly proud.

Hopefully, this year we can complete 5km in less than three hours. 😂
