I'm walking to end violence against women and children.
I will be participating in the Walk for WAGEC in September and am looking to raise funds to support this community organisation based on Gadigal and Wangal land.
As an aspiring social worker whose ultimate goal is to work specifically with women experiencing vulnerability, I am very passionate about the work that WAGEC (Women and Girls Emergency Centre) do.
In Australia, 1 woman is killed every 11 days by an intimate partner. 1 child also dies every fortnight as a consequence of domestic and family violence.
Domestic violence is an issue that can negatively affect many different aspects of survivors' lives. For example, the primary factor contributing to female homelessness in Australia is domestic and family violence. Female homelessness is a key factor contributing to the rising incarceration rates among women in Australia and can also create and perpetuate the cycle of poverty for women and their families.
Supporting survivors by helping me to raise funds for WAGEC means that services such as crisis accommodation, trauma-informed recovery programs, specialised support for children, and gender-based violence prevention initiatives can be improved and made more accessible to the women and children who need it.
